Weekly reflection
In a little over a week we will have a new Bishop for the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, the sixth since the Diocese was established in 1965. Fr Stephen Wang will be consecrated Bishop on Monday 19th October at Arundel Cathedral and from that time on we will pray for him at each and every Mass along with Pope Leo.
Let us keep Fr Stephen in prayer this week as he prepares to embark on his new responsibilities. Let us not overly burden him with our own expectations, the greatest gift he brings is the gift of himself. Anyone asked to assume a position of leadership and governance, civil or religious, is taking on an immense responsibility these days.
We are not always an easy people to shepherd and guide; the structures that have served us well in the Church these past years may no longer be fit for purpose; and the green shoots of faith spring up amidst a general culture of apostasy and malaise.
The challenge is immense – nor more or less than the Gospel itself. I have a feeling Fr Stephen will be, in Christ, well up to the challenge and opportunities ahead. Will we? Let us pray for him and each other as a new chapter opens up in the life and mission of our Diocese.
Our new Bishop is keen to meet with people from around the Diocese as soon as possible. To that end, there will be a special service at Worth Abbey on Saturday 24th October. A coach from Epsom Deanery will be going and St Joseph’s has been allocated ten seats and places at Worth. There is a sign up sheet in the Narthex and you would be very welcome. The pick up points for the coach are indicated on the sign up sheet with Tadworth and Ashtead being the nearest.
With every blessing,
Fr Simon
